Carmen Deck will receive a third Penalty Phase trial March 27, 2007. He received the death penalty twice before. Surely a third jury will make the same decision - we pray for justice.

I visit this website often. Was wondering if anything had ever been decided on Carmen Deck's fate? Hopefully, he has received the death penalty again. He can't hold out forever. He is guilty of murder. Plain and simple. End of story. Doesn't matter about shackles or no shackles. He has destroyed enough lives living and deceased. His actions has ruined the lives of numerous people. I hope and pray that justice will finally be done. For your sakes and for Jim and Zelma.

I am a junior at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I studied this case for a government class that I was in and actually attended the US Supreme Court hearing. Upon hearing the arguments I called both of the attorneys the following week and spoke with them personally about their feelings on the case. I was disgusted and horrified with the decision of the Justices. Reading it was hard for me to believe. I hope that your relatives are happy wherever they may be, and that you find peace in the notion that Carmen Deck is a sick animal that will eventually get what he has coming.

Karen, I looked through your scrapbook at Windermere chronicling the whole legal process your family has been through. It has haunted me, so I wanted to look at your website. It is a beautiful tribute to two very loving people. I can't imagine what you and your family has been through, but you have my complete sympathy. May it bring you peace that they are in God's loving arms and that where their murderer goes, it'll be very hot. He may not get what's coming to him on Earth, but he'll get his in the end. I wish you strength and peace.

Wow! I'm so sorry. My brother and wife were murdered 4 years ago by 70 yr old neighbor. 1-1/2 yrs to get a 30 yr sentence. I can't imagine going through all those appeals, but I would do it. I enjoyed the poem. Have a peaceful holiday.

I just peeked in to look and was surprised at all the comments! Thanks to all of you that share your thoughts. Each day still goes by in a blur of pain from what happened. We can now only pray that with the third upcoming penalty phase trial that a third jury will come to the same decision as we and the last two juries have. No one can really know what this is like until they walk in our shoes and it is sad how many do walk in our shoes. We must remain strong and focused that the system will do what is called for -- justice.

John & I met Jim & Zelma through their son Martin - we met Marty while stationed at Fort Hood Texas in the 70's - several years later while on vacation we decided to see if we could locate Marty again and we did - we then met Jim & Zelma and they took us in like a second family - since we are from Ohio, Jim would like to make bets with John on the different sports teams - Jim won most of the bets. I could not believe how close a large family was until I met the Longs. We had many enjoyable times at the lake house and we were with Marty when he received the call about his parents - this was a time in life I would like to turn back - I have never seen a family so torn. We feel like we lost a part of our family also - the family still continues to share their love that was taught to them by their parents. I know in my heart that Jim & Zelma are together and watching over each of their family members. I also know that Carmen Deck will get what's due him as long as the victims and their families stand strong and get the laws changed so the bleeding hearts won't release these murderers. I feel if you can't do the time don't to the crime. My prayers are with the Long family as they go from day to day. Love to ya Peg

I was born and raised in Festus Missouri and remember watching the news about Jim and Zelma. I've never had to live the kind of pain you and your family will probably always go through from such a thing, but I do believe in the death penalty 199% and it stuns me how unfair and ineffective many of our laws are. I've got brothers who have had a friend beaten to death by the police, his skull was beaten in, yet it was called suicide by hanging. I agree that he wasn't a very 'nice' guy but he didn't deserve to die like that. Our police are 'supposed' to serve and protect. i don't take the word 'justice' to seriously because that is hardly always the case. The police once beat one of my brothers (Don), including macing his eyes, because they 'didn't like' another of my brothers. My brother that they 'don't like', is disliked by them for very wrong reasons. He's schizophrenic, and very strange, due to me and my siblings being brought up in an environment of both parents ritually abusing us in every way imaginable from toddler ages all the way into our teens. John got the worst of the abuse and it affected him to where now he is very reclusive, afraid of everyone around him, mainly the police. He's isolated himself from all family and friends. He does no drugs yet he still has to fear 'them' (the police) because he's different and 'they'll hurt him' is how he sees it. And given the chance, i don't doubt it. Their friend, Wayne, is proof of that. May peace be with you all and eventually justice be served. B

Hello, this is for the family of James and Zelma Long. About four years ago, after thinking for the first 12 years of my life that my father had been around me my whole life, I questioned that particular fact and soon found out that in fact, I hadn't met my biological father. I learned the story, and found out that my father was in an extreme situation. Now sixteen, and after a few letters from him which I did not return (I had no desire to speak with a murderer), I decided to look up how the lives of his victims were coming. I accidentally ran across your website while searching for his (my friend brought it to my attention that he had one, and I was curious to see what his lunatic views were on what he had done.) I'm sorry to say that I was not impressed with his "Justification" and quickly turned back to your website in memory of these truly devoted people to find out more on what happened. Anyway, I thought that I would leave a little message here to express MY apologies for your parents, and I hope that you were able to get through this trauma well. Feel free to e-mail me with any response. Again, I am sorry.

This is for Karen Long. I have just read your comment Karen that you are hardly a family today because of this scum. I am a hard man and have had terrible things in my life like two daughters both for a time heroin addicts, with lots of their friends dead, but you just about brought tears to my eyes. I know how hard it is when your family falls apart because of the terrible stresses from horrors like this. It has happened to us Karen we are here in Western Australia. I am truly sorry to hear your comments below it is so sad, I really wish I could do something to make it better. Monsters of birth like Deck suffer burning torment all of the time because they have to live with themselves. DO you see though Karen that this reprieve is only just that, a reprieve and he will ultimately pay the American price for this atrocity, he is just going to suffer longer. I believe he had a brutal infancy, but my mum died of cancer when I was 4, I didn't nor could I go out and kill some innocent for what happened to me. I agree with the law enforcement bloke below who as the arresting officer, should indeed have a good insight into this pond scum. From what I read, Deck had and has no redeeming features whatsoever. I hope things get better for you Karen and your family and I hope that they and you forgive each other and come closer. It is far too easy to blame and strike out to dull the pain. very kindest regards Steve

Firstly, whoever is reading this Guest Book, do NOT pay any serious attention to the message below signed by David John. It is a scam based in Nigeria, and has been around in different variations for a long time. Some who have been taken by it have tried to retrieve their money by visiting the capital city but a few got murdered. I repeat, do not liaise with these criminals, and lets face it, what sort of scum would try to scam people on a mourning site like this? I hope I have helped someone here. Secondly, I note the LE Officer below who arrested this bloke Carman Deck. His opinion is that he is a monster. It seems clear that he shot 2 elderly gentle people for no reason but financial gain. I have to agree with the LE Officer, this man has forsaken his entitlement to life on this planet. But, what he is doing is what he is programmed to, biologically, that is, he is trying with every fibre to survive. He knows it is only a matter of time, but if people listened to their inner voices like that, the Second World War would have been over in Europe 2 years before it actually finished. People are an evolutionary, or at least a developmental, result, and part of the fact that we have got so far as a species is due to our extremely high survival instinct. He is probably sociopathic, definitely borderline personality syndrome, but all of that is just wiring which after reading some of the very early comments on this Guest Book, was probably mis-wired through a disgusting infancy and childhood. NO excuse for what he did though, he deserves to hang. I'm not going to be so trite as to offer condolences, I didn't know your parents but I lost my mum when I was 4 and I can empathise with you to some extent. I have also been in jail, not for violence though, and of all the types and shades I met in there, I abhorred the murderers. I can't understand how humans can do that and remain alive themselves. Anyhow, don't worry, this guy is going to hang, just taking more time that's all. I hope you all can heal soon. very best regards Steve

I want to assure the family that all of the police officers and prosecutors involved in this case will continue to pursue justice for the family. I am not surprised at the outcome by the US Supreme Court's decision. Our family attended the oral argument. We were appalled that some of the Justices jokingly asked if the murderer was a big man? Weren't there guards in there? Yes, he is a big man and yes there were guards in the room, but how could a guard even raise a gun in a courtroom packed with people. I think that the jurors should be asked if they even noticed he was shackled. It would be my guess that they did not. He was always seated before they were even brought in. There were boxes of files blocking their view as well. It is truly a sad time in our family. Not only did he kill two members of our family, but he killed the surviving members, we are hardly a family today. I just cannot imagine what the justices were thinking. What about safety for jurors, judges, employees and witnesses in the courtroom? After all, everyone knows the decision of guilt has already been made. The decision to be made was of punishment. This person in particular, had made a confession. Where is the justice for the victims?

I found your lovely site while Googling Carmen Deck's case number from an article I found at CNN.com. I was disheartened to find out that the Supreme Court threw out Deck's conviction on the basis of his being shackled in front of the jury. The fact that he confessed to such an atrocious crime should have taken precedence. Rest assured he WILL be convicted on re-trial. I'm just so sorry that you and your family will have to re-live this horror. It shouldn't be allowed to happen.

I had found this website as I was doing research on Capital Punishment for my English paper. I had read your story here and it broke my heart and today I ended up here again, because of what I saw in the paper about the conviction being thrown out due to shackling. I just wanted you to know that I am appalled at this ruling and I am keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers as you have to relive the pain again by this ruling. I wish I could give you comfort and peace during this time and I pray that God reaches out to your family and holds all of you tight in his hand. I will also pray that one day soon, our justice system will realize that we need to stop codling the criminals and start handing out the justice in order to give the victims and their families the peace and justice they deserve. God Bless!

I feel horrible that criminals are set free everyday by "accident". What can we do to get a better hold on our criminal justice system to prevent these things from happening? Being a law enforcement officer, I can't understand how anyone could let a criminal come into a courtroom WITHOUT shackles! I fear for my life every day when I come into work. Just to have them "free" in a courtroom when they are being prosecuted for the crimes they have been IDENTIFIED for having committed?! Our justice system needs to stop worrying about people's rights after they have already been convicted of or identified as the person who committed the crime! I feel that every convicted felon should lose ALL their rights! Why should they get to have what they took from their victims?! I pray for families just like yours. Not to mention the unsuspecting families of the murderer. More prayer in everyone's life might help our society from the downward spiral we are in. God Bless your family.

Angela and I were childhood friends growing up in DeSoto. Having lost contact with her over 19 years ago I was just recently told of this tragedy. It was so horrific I wanted desperately for it not to be true. Linda, Billy, Angie, Marty, Chrissy, Laura, my heart is breaking for your family. One of my most vivid memories of the time I spent at your home all those years ago was how much your parents loved each other and how important you kids were to them. I will always remember what wonderful people your folks were and each kindness they showed me, they always made room for one more kid.

I grew up in DeSoto and were friends with the long kids. I'm so sorry to hear about this awful time in the family's life. I would love to hear from Linda, Angie and Billy. I don't know if they would remember me from back then. linda worked with my mom at the old Summit cafe. Her name is Loretta Fincher. My sister Sharon Webber used to be Angie's best friend when they were kids. My brother Donald Fincher was very good friends with Marty when they were kids at Athena school. I married Charles Wood at 16. Billy took me on my first motorcycle ride . Jim and Zelma were wonderful people. I'm so sorry to hear this awful news.

I talked to Karen about the Murder Wall, and she gave me a brief history of Jim & Zelma's murder. After reading the story on this site, I felt the impact even more. I am very sorry for your loss, and I hope that justice is served in the end. My prayers are with your family.

I am so sorry for your loss...I grew up in DeSoto and remember thinking how could such a horrible crime happen in our picturesque little area of the world! I had met the Longs a time or two and even though I was a small child at the time I remember how nice they were to me and that I knew when I grew old I wanted to be that nice to people as well, that is how they touched my life. Even though I no longer live in that area I think about them often. They were wonderful people and will always be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Jim & Zelma were our neighbor's at the lake. They were such wonderful friendly people. My wife would cut Jim's hair and we would have such nice visits. They were very family oriented and loved their children and grandchildren. Bill & Karen are very good friends and I think what they are doing here is wonderful. God Bless this whole family. Friends always, Rick

February 18, 2005 Karen Long RE: The MURDER WALL You are cordially invited to attend the press conference and the official opening of the Murder Wall, a traveling monument to homicide victims for the first time at the Capitol in Jefferson City, Thursday, March 3rd and 4th on the main floor Rotunda, moving to the 3rd floor March 5th through the 9th. Attorney General Jay Nixon will speak at 1 p.m., along with Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Scroggins. Family members of murder victims, James and Zelma Long will be on hand. They wish to invite the public and homicide survivors to be a part of this presentation. The Wall, created in 1987, is comprised of 23 walnut panes, each carrying 120 brass plates inscribed with the names of homicide victims, their dates of birth and dates of deaths. With someone in the U.S. being murdered once every 21 minutes, the Wall continues to grow at an unfortunately rapid pace. The Wall is a tangible and visible reminder that murder touches everyone, not just a select few. In this way loved ones are not forgotten. When it leaves the Capitol of Missouri, it will be displayed at Columbia College in Osage Beach for two weeks. The Long family would be honored if you would take time from your busy schedule to attend this press conference and opening of the Murder Wall. In addition, please extend this invitation to friends and other members in your department Sincerely, Karen Long

I was watching the news last night when I seen the clip of your mom and dad. I think it is a shame that people like Carmen Deck are able to have a web site. To me he should of lost all rights when he was put on death row. It still hurts to this day what happened. Mr. Long was so kind to our family when my dad was ill. He helped out by taking my dad to the doctor. I remember spending many weekends at the Longs house with Laura. I can always remember the kindness they always showed me when I was at their house. They were like 2nd parents to me. You could never have asked for two nicer people. I am very proud to say that I was able to spend time with their family over the years. Laura if you read this please e-mail me - it has been a long time since I talked to you.

I am so sorry for your tragic loss...It is a painful wound to live with. I take it one day at a time. Some days are less tolerable than others. I too am a homicide survivor. My brother was murdered 7 years ago, and it hurts today as if it happened yesterday. My brother's killer also displays their pictures and info on a web page all over the internet and it sickens me.  If you are putting together signatures or need anyone to brainstorm ideas with to have these web pages banned please contact me. Karen and family: My dad is Charles W Lewis and is Jim's cousin. Your family has been has been kind to my family over the years. My dad spent quite a bit of time growing up with your dad and living with your granddad when his mom fell on hard times. You are a kind and loving family and did not need to be attacked by this viper! My daughter was born a few months before the murder of Jim and Zelma and thatís when I found out about this horrible act against your family from my dad. He told me about the funeral and how many people were there in support of your family. We may be distant relatives but I take this travesty of justice to heart, I check in on this site on a regular basis to see if the long overdue justice has been carried out. I must say that I am frustrated to see that it has not been. Is there anything that we can do to help you in putting this nonsense to an end? Sincerely Yours Mark Lewis

I'm not finished yet - it's raining. We have been attacked at the State Capitol by those apposing the death penalty. They say why not life in prison? If the prisons get full, we'll just build more. Or if they were in our shoes and it had been their wife or daughter it would be ok with them. I laughed, they have not walked in our shoes yet, and I hope they never will have to. These are the same people who have the power to change laws, let murderers out. Look at Illinois, look at Texas. Because of later laws created (grandfathering does not happen) we are going to have someone let lose that has killed 13 women and is suspected of killing possibly 30 more! That's what you get with life in prison - the possibility of release. States are different than Federal. What may be life in prison is not always life in prison in some states, victims are not aware of this when they are pressured to let defendants have life in prison.

I read in here what is probably the more true version of the puppy story that was brought up during the trial. Thank you. It is a sad day in America for victims. We are assured of a quick trial. But - that has not been the case here. Due to the many appeals set forth for defendants the road to justice for our parents has been a long and bumpy one. We have been to court in Jefferson County, the Missouri Supreme Court, back to Jefferson County, then to the Missouri Supreme Court and now, this spring, to the United States Supreme Court before we continue through the rest of the courts in Missouri and back to the US Supreme Court. I have read the appeals that are 100s of pages long, each time the story gets a little more jumbled. We have been attacked by the defendant's lawyer for reading a victim impact statement about how we feel. Reading was the only way to get through without crying, we are not allowed to show emotion, while the defendant's side can put on an emotional show out of this world. We have to just sit there. We are asked to create a family tree for the court to see. It was objected to because we listed our dead brother on there. He was on it at the first trial, why not the second time? Why should there be any objection of showing our brother, he was their son. The second time it was objected because grandchildren and great-grandchildren were listed on there who were not born at the time of the murders? Why not? They are still part of their family tree. And now we go to Washington DC to hear the argument that being shackled was cruel and unusual punishment, that the jury could be slanted seeing the defendant shackled. I ask you to think about where our judicial system is headed when a defendant who has been found guilty not once, but twice for first degree premeditated murders has the right to be unshackled during the penalty phase of a trial? He had already been found guilty, the jury knew that, they were there to decide punishment only. Why should we want to be in a courtroom with a defendant who has nothing to lose by risking flight? We have heard so much about poor Carman Deck, poor Carman Deck's childhood, that it seems the true victim's in this case have been forgotten, they are hardly mentioned in this case.

These were my grandparents. I miss them. I miss going to their house and eating orange slices, playing on the piano (until grandpa came home), playing teacher with grandma's old crystal city school supplies, and digging under grandpa's chair for change. I think that's what I think about the most is that change. I use to get so many quarters from underneath that chair every day after school. Now that I'm older I realize there is no way that much change could fall out of someone's pocket daily. I believe now that grandma told him about me digging under his chair for money and he planted it there for me. There was nothing more exciting then to see how many quarters I would find next time.

I am SO sorry for you loss. I can not imagine the pain you have gone through. Back in the 70's my family lived across the street from the Decks. Unfortunately, I think none of us are surprised that the elder son has committed such a heinous crime. I am just sorry that we were not wrong, and that your family members were the victims. I think most of us also wonder if there was not some way we could have changed this man's destiny. Again, I am very sorry for you all.

1st let me say how sorry i am. i have followed the case closely and still do in 2004. i live in the next co south of jefferson co. the deck family were my neighbors for about 6 Holy hell months. i reported them several times over the things that went on. the abuse and neglect was evident and it made the children violent toward other people and even animals. i once stopped carmen's sister tonya from throwing a 2nd puppy onto the highway as a speeding car came by. i could not prevent the death of the first puppy as i did not realize what she was doing until it was too late. she laughed gleefully when it happened. any acts of kindness to them were repaid with cusswords and vandalism. i admit when they got evicted it was a happy day for me. i always knew they would commit more crimes but never realized how bad it would be. at that time Carmen was about 10. my intro to him was a strange boy knocking my 6 year old out of her sandbox she and friends were playing in. then cussing me out when i asked who he was and why he did it. i pray your family finds peace and comfort. i do believe your loved ones are in heaven. find it disturbing that his case is now going to the supreme court.

You are in my prayers. I knew Carman "Pete" Deck and his sister Tonia from St. Genevieve, and despite the fact they both had terrible childhoods, it does not excuse their behavior. It was a senseless murder. Pete has always been in trouble, and he deserves what he gets. I wish you all well.

I miss my grandparents deeply. It saddens me that such wonderful and caring people can't be here today because someone else thought they had the right to take their lives. My son may never to be able to meet the most loving great grandparents he would have ever had, but he will know who they were and how they were. They will never be forgotten. They will always be in our hearts and memories.

I miss Uncle Jim and Aunt Zelma. It saddens me to think that their lives were cut short so that their murderer can live on. I pray that God passes down judgment on Deck to never see another day. I pray for my cousins so that they can finally have peace. Love to my family - Jeannie

The wrong people are killing the wrong people for the wrong reasons. The death penalty does deter crime. It is insane to claim that crime is not deterred when a criminal is killed. To believe this is a form of religious thinking, which only goes far enough and only accepts what it wants to reach the conclusion it wants. Fortunately, people who believe this cannot will criminal activity back into the dead criminal. Using religion our system has been perverted, so that innocent people become victims and we all have to pay for this system. When creating portraits I am usually working with people who care and know that a natural death causes them great pain. My mother was murdered by doctors who are untouchable, so I can assure you what the people of Missouri and these United States are doing to those who cared for James and Zelma is: well, I cannot think of any other form of animal life that is lower. Shame on all of us. Besides the agony and active torture these victims have been subjected to there is the waste of taxpayers money and the resources that could have gone to better use. One of which should be to compensate citizens who have been incarcerated when they were innocent. I am sorry and I apologize that I am part of the American Victim System.

I am sorry for your loss. I am starting school in the fall to study to be a crime scene tech. I have read so many stories about murder and it really saddens me, but I want to be able to try and help solve crimes, and possibly prevent other crimes from happening. I've learned a lot by reading stories like these so I just wanted you to know that at least something good can come out of something tragic. Best Regards to Your family, Shannon

I just wanted to tell you that I was a juror on this case. I spent a week with other jurors as we heard all the evidence. It made me very sad to see this man even take a breath of air after what he has done to the "HUB" of your family's wheel. I will never forget that week and the pain I felt for your family. It changed my life as well. Feel free to contact me - I have left my e-mail. P.s. I was on the first trial, and was appalled that he was given another trial.

Today is my birthday, and like every day I think of Jim and Zelma several times throughout my wanderings. Their loss effects me like a fever -- sometimes it runs hot and makes me warm to touch with funny memories. Other times the fever runs cold and I feel a hate emanating deep inside that won't go away.

Well my darlings, I hope by now that man's life has ended and my heart goes out to you all. I live in the UK and had never heard of you or of your nightmare until today when I had an email asking me to write to the governers of prisons in the US asking for mercy and found your story and I then did write to the President but not to ask for mercy but for him to stay strong and put to death these scum who ruin lives . I hope and pray that your lives are filled with peace and love now my darlings and I send you all my love from the United Kingdom . Be strong because Jim and Zelma would only want that . All my love Jean xxxxx

I am so horrified at such an act upon such wonderful people. This must break our Lord's heart as He watches such heartless acts by the people He created to fellowship with. My heart has been so touched by this. Please accept my condolences and know my prayers are with your family. May God bless and keep you in His care.

Jim and Zelma were the most wonderful people, not just because they were my husband's parents, but because they treated my children as if they were born into the family. They treated me as though my husband and I were together forever. My regret is they were never able to enjoy our grandchildren, and our grandchildren will never be able to experience their love and care that they otherwise would have been able to had we not lost Jim and Zelma. We miss them every moment of everyday.

I miss Jim & Zelma so much. I miss the tomatoes and peaches Jim grew. I was the first one to hold him and change his diaper when he was born. I thought it was an honor. They played pinochle every week with my mom and dad. They were so good to them. I love them so much and know they are in heaven. Aunt Angela

When the judge read the sentence for the murder of comedian Bill Cosby's son, the judge remarked "may God have mercy on your soul". Bill Cosby stood up in court and addressed the courtroom. He said..."God was not with you when you killed my boy, the Devil was with you. Let the Devil now have your soul." The same goes for Carmen Deck. May the Devil have his soul.

There's not a day goes by that I do not think of my mom and dad. They were the best parents a child could ask for and the best friends I could have as an adult. There will always be a hole in my heart with their loss. I look at the lake every day and remember how much enjoyment they received from it. I go to South Dakota each fall and remember joking with dad and the guys there. I remember mom with all her "chickies" surrounding her and now her chicks are lost without her.

THIS IS A WONDERFUL AND HEART-WRENCHING STORY. I HAD KNOWN YOUR FATHER FOR 35 YEARS. I WORKED AT THE EAST SIDE MARKET FOR B. LONG, MY FATHER-IN-LAW AT THE TIME I MET YOUR FATHER. I MET YOUR MOTHER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. WHEN I WORKED FOR THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT, I WOULD SEE YOUR FATHER IN THE STORE AT THE GAS STATION. I HAVE MET BILL WHEN HE WOULD RIDE WITH YOUR DAD DELIVERING CANDY AND CIG. FOR MR. CUNDUFF OUT OF BONNE TERRE. I BELIEVE THE IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPRESS YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR PARENTS AND A GREAT WAY TO SHOW WHAT EXCRUCIATING PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE AN HOW THEY GET SO MANY BREAKS. BY RIGHTS THEY DO NOT DESERVE ANYTHING BUT A PUBLIC HANGING.
