I have been in law enforcement for 32 years and currently am a member of the Colorado Attorney general's Capital Crimes Unit - which assists the 22 DA's around the state on potential capital murder cases. I will be long retired before the six inmates, who's cases I've worked on over the past 7 1/2 years, will be executed. Why? Because of the lengthy appeals process and the amount of money allowed to be spent by our courts. "Justice is doing the right thing, for the right reason, the right way."

I would just like to let you know that the story shocked me when I first read it. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to you. In junior high and in the beginning of high school I was very close friends with Elizabeth Pena. From the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school when this tragedy happened I have thought about her and her friend at least once a day and our memories as friends will never be forgotten! On coming to this site to find research for a school project, I was actually anti-death, believing death to be an escape rather than a punishment and that criminals should be made to suffer for their crimes. However, on reading your story involving girls similar to my age, I can see how important it must be to find justice for their deaths. Obviously, nothing can ever make up for their loss, but knowing that their killers are literally going to vanish from the earth must be really important. Although this will mean nothing, I would just like to offer my sincere condolences and hope you can find what little comfort from them that is possible to gain. I don't know if the families ever read these messages, but if you do.... I went to Seton Jr. High with Elizabeth. We were not close friends, but friendly enough in the way junior high kids are. I can remember having conversations about how boring certain teachers were, about upcoming dances. I still have a picture she gave me of herself in 7th or 8th grade -- the little wallet-size kind that everyone loves to exchange in junior high. I mostly remember her always laughing, full of life. Like alot of Seton kids, I went on to St. Pius where Elizabeth went for her 9th grade year and have always thought it wrong that SPX didn't do anything to memorialize her memory and the presence she had been there, even if she was no longer a student. I was glad to read that her friends at Waltrip had done so. I haven't lived in Houston for a long time (I live in New York City now), but I still remember. I just wanted you to know that your daughter is not forgotten, even by one who only knew her a little. I pray for your families and light candles at mass in memory. May Christ's peace fill all who were scarred by this tragedy.

I came across your website quite by chance and having read of the events surrounding the murder of those two girls then those who did it deserved all that was coming to them. We do not have the death penalty here in the UK but there are times when i wish that we did. We too have our notable killers such as myra hindley and her lover ian brady ( child killers ) Fred and Rose West,( Murdered young girls including their own daughter and buried the bodies within their own house 16 young lives snuffed out for nothing.) Finally, Dr Harold Shipman (A medical doctor who was convicted of killing 16 of his elderly patients by giving them lethal doses of Diamorphine a powerful pain killer. That said, although he was convicted of killing 16 of his patients, he is believed to have actually murdered around 200 people. Why should people like them who inflict so much pain and suffering continue to draw breath when those whom they murdered will no longer be able to do so. I too have a 3 year old daughter and another one due any time now and i just cannot imagine the hell the families must have gone through if my children were victims then i too would demand the same thing for their killers. I am terribly sorry for your loss. I am a student at Cal State Long Beach and I have been assigned to write an argumentative essay and I decided to write against the death penalty, but now I have changed my mind. I have always had a hard time deciding if the death penalty is a justified punishment for murders, until now. After reading about these two girls I was overcome with sadness. I started crying when I read about the horrible things that those boys did. I was assaulted about a year ago, nothing as serious as these girls were, but nevertheless I was extremely frightened so I can only imagine the fear that they must have felt. I lived in Houston from 1992 to 1999, before returning to Minnesota. This crime still comes to mind. I met Randy Ertman, on a motorcycle ride organized by The Parents of Murdered Children. He was amazingly calm that day, although I would suspect the pain is still there, years later. God bless the Pena and Ertman families, and know that their beautiful daughters are in a safe place.

I am studying criminal justice working to become an attorney. After viewing this case and story it just touches me, and makes me realize why i choose this field. My dear condolences to both families. This may be a little too late but I went to school with Elizabeth at St. Elizabeth Anne Seton. And remember her very vividly. This horrible crime happened when I was very young, well I was the same age as Liz. But I remember these horrific events as if they were yesterday. I just happened to stumble upon this sad website. I have just read the reports and had no idea of the evil that was in the air that night. Being that I now understand saddens me a great deal. I am now married and am an engineer for Halliburton, and still have kept in touch with several of my friends from Seton. In every one of our conversation Lizzy's name always comes up and it's still hard to swallow that someone we talked to and joked around with every day was taken away from us at that age. At that time all I really understood was, was that she was no longer with us. In my parting words I hope that the Lord punishes these perpetrators to the fullest extent.
