I now plan to use Pam's story when I debate in favor of the death penalty because it is a perfect example of who the government ought to execute- there is no doubt about who did this to her, and the other side's defense is that the risk of executing an innocent person is too great. He was strangled to the bedpost with a nintendo game controller cord. My mother found him. The person who murdered him is now in jail. They found him soon after. He is scheduled to get out. I do not know how I feel about the death penalty but I would like him to pay for what he has done. I do not think that anyone who has murdered someone should be let out. I am 16 now and I plan to do something about keeping him in jail. So once again, I do understand what you are going through and hang in there. Karma will get him. It's insulting that people throughout the world base their personal opinions on a few minutes of information that would not stand up in court, but will not believe that Texas juries can reach a decision based on the facts presented to them over a period of weeks and months. Although his attorneys are most likely already doing what they can to start another round of appeals, I hope the "third time is the charm" with this case and he's executed as quickly as possible. Interestingly enough, I am taking a very strong stance opposing the death penalty. CommentsYesterday, April 12, I read an article in the Houston Chronicle about Penry's last appeal and that a jury would again be allowed to decide his fate--life or death. Then as I was driving home from shopping last night, I heard the song that accompanies this beautiful website, and I was reminded I had not visited in a while. I grew up in Goodrich, my dad knew the elder Moseleys well. Although I did not know Pam, I, along with most other teenage girls at the time worshipped her brother, Mark, from afar as the God we all thought he was. My daughter knew you, Ellen, from school and various activities in and around town. I think of this horrible crime often, and truly hope that this time, justice will finally be served, and Penry will get his just rewards. My family's prayers are with all the family as you once again have to confront this head on and pray that once again that animal will be sentenced to death. God Bless you all.

CommentsThis site was very helpful for me. My heart went out then I read about Pamela. I cited work in my research paper from this site and listed the site in the work cited page. I hope that more people will visit this site and think about the victim's in these crimes before they go to support the removal of the death penalty. My brother Sean was shot and killed by his roommate in Oct 88. The guy that killed him only received 20 years for it. His only reason he did it was "I wanted to see what it felt like to kill someone" To this day I still don't understand what is wrong with some people and how they can do such things.

The "person" responsible is serving time in prison, however, the death penalty has never been mentioned as a part of his punishment. Just like you and your family, I have thought about it everyday. I come from a country placed among the top 4 regarding the number of executions, but although I am against capital punishment decreed for women for extramarital sex by Islamic courts, I believe in cases such as Pamela's, the respect for human life must come first for the innocent victims and not for the murderers. Your great niece, Pamela, would have loved the fun we used to have at Halloween. She is 9 now. Same age I was when you died. I looked at her on halloween and was glad she wasn't going through what I did on my 9th halloween. She dressed in her fifties outfit, and wore your letter jacket. It still had your gloves in the pocket and the kleenex you used at the last football game you wore it at. We left them in the pockets, and she wrote you a letter and put it in the pocket also. She deserves justice. I am a very passive person but people are being ignorant to accept this behaviour because of his mental status. CommentsI had not heard of this case until my recent visit to Washington DC; the most profound experience in my 37 years was on June 4 2001, the day US Supreme Court gave their opinion on this case. I was there in the Courtroom as a tourist, to see our Justice System in action. I felt so moved that they would overturn a death sentence to someone so severely retarded and hoped that the life of this person would be spared. I do support the death penalty, but felt the jury was not informed of how severe his retardation was (According to the court). I have now changed my mind after viewing your site. I believe that the US Supreme Court was misled about this mans retardation, and that perhaps the question of his retardation should be before the Supreme Court. I dont believe he is all that retarded he has been smart enough to do all that I read on your site. His mental condition should be before the Court because once it was decided that he is not so retarded there would be no question that he would be put to death. I only wish for you, it could be this easy. I have shared this experience and my change of heart with all of those that I know, and will continue to do so. CommentsI cannot believe that this monster has not been brought to justice. The murder victim was able to testify against him even, and with that he has still been able to block the sentence. If he was not bad enough to be institutionalized, then he is not so bad that he cannot receive his due.

I remember when this happened, and the shock that went through not only Livingston, but all of Polk County. This kind of thing was not supposed to happen in a small town where everyone knew everyone else. Shelly, I was too much of an introverted and insecure schoolgirl (I know..hard to believe, huh?) to have had the courage to offer my condolences at the time of this tragedy. CommentsI came to this web page after I heard that the killer's death sentence was overturned. I don't understand in the first place how anyone could employ someone with the killer's prior record and his mental capacity, giving him access to people's homes. It occurs to me it is the state's fault for letting him go the first time. I am sorry they overturned the death sentence and that because of this you cannot close this chapter in your lives. I will pray for you and hope one day this man gets what he rightly deserves, an eternal place in Hell.

Prison is not as horrible as people think. Prisoners get to watch cable TV, play sports, learn some new skills and the like. CommentsI grew up in Livingston with Pam. After we moved to Houston, Pam came to visit me there and we kept in touch over time. The last time we spoke she called to check on me after I was involved in a car accident. I can still hear her little voice saying, "Layne Ann, do you know who this is?" I was in school at Texas A&M when I got the news of her death, and I guess I've thought about her and the whole family every day since. Rossie and Jack were centerpieces in my life from a young age, and my heart bleeds for you even now. Trust that you are all in my daily prayers. I hope that one day you will see justice done and have some closure. This cruel, ongoing nightmare MUST end. Godspeed.

While currently working on my college thesis dealing with the death penalty in America, I came across your family's story. I have never been able to convince myself that any man has the right to judge and condemn one another to death .....My research has led me to some of the most horrific and terrifying crimes and criminals imaginable....now I'm left confused and praying that I never come face to face with the issues your family has, because I truly have no idea how I would deal with it....May you find some measure of comfort and peace in this life ...God Bless .........

CommentsI remember the day this tragedy happen. The little town of Livingston was shock and sickened with grief. Pam was a year older than me, but I remember her well. She was pretty, funny, nice. I remember her in her drill team uniform. How proud she stood. I'm sorry for the Mosley's, the loss and grief that they have gone through for so many years. I'll never be convinced that John Paul did not know what he was doing. I pray for strength and closure for your family.
CommentsI grew up in Goodrich, right down the street from where Penry's aunt lived. I remember vividly when this horrible and tragic murder happened. I do not understand why this animal is still alive. I f anyone deserves the death penalty, it is him. I pray for this family. My daughter went to school with the nieces, and was friends, at least nodding acquaintances with the girls. I hope the day comes when you all will find some sort of peace.

Every time I hear or read a story like this, I am further convinced that if used...it is a good deterrent. Even if not a deterrent, why would we want anyone on this Earth who could be so brutal? CommentsI knew Pam in school, even though I was a little older than her. We were all grief stricken at the time of the incident. We were also filled with horror that anything like this could have happened in our small town. It breaks my heart that the family and friends have never been given the opportunity for closure in this matter. I have over the years kept up with the case. My heart goes out to the family of Pam. My anger builds against the justice system. Penry took all rights from Pam and her family. He has long since exhausted all his rights. While as taxpayers Pam's family help to pay for his existence. Pam will always be remembered with the fondest of memories. Ellen, I know you don't know me, but thank you for this memorial. It is beautiful, as was Pam.

The only issue at hand is whether or not the murderer knew the difference between right and wrong. All the evidence points that way, including the decisions of the two juries who heard this case. I maybe be wrong, but I feel that capital punishment is a short cut to the one's sufferings. I would prefer the person to live a long life and see it wasted in a prison cell alone with no connection to the outside world at all. One should not pity Penry for the crimes he has done based on his supposedly mental retardation. But if is really retarded then killing him will do him no good, he would not understand death. And if he is not mentally retarded, then I guess it would torture him to live the rest of his life in the prison. Time is a great healer .. it takes a longer time to heal bigger wounds !

After reading the article, I did a search for "Pamela Moseley Carpenter" and immediately found your website. I first want to apologize for the loss and for the immense sadness your family has had to endure over the years. I second want to apologize for the ridiculous manner in which the media tries to gain sympathy on the behalf of a man who has committed such a horrendous act - on the terms that he is mentally retarded. Nevermind the sympathy on behalf of the deceased and the family of. That in itself is tragic. Pam was a beautiful woman and from your descriptions of her, a loving and devoted family member. I just want you to know that you are forever now in my thoughts and prayers and I hope that irregardless of this monsters state of mind, he be punished for this crime and held responsible for his acts.
