Our Layton would have turned 27 yrs. old on March 25th/06. I always wonder every day what he would be doing and where he would be living. I miss talking to him about what was happening in his life. Today is Valentine's Day 2006. I remember Layton always remembering Valentine Day and giving us Valentine cards even when he was a little boy. I had tears today thinking of him, and once again wishing I could give him a big hug. These special days still make me very sad and feel even more lonesome for Layton. I have not visited this site for quite some time but still think about Layton everyday. I have been dealing with a serious health issue with my own son this last year and a close call like we experienced with my own son makes you appreciate the little things in life. Walking, talking, playing, breathing. Sometimes we don't say or show how we love, appreciate and cherish the ones dearest to us. My greatest regret is that I didn't say these things to Layton when I had the chance. I always thought them but never said them. Cherish everyday: the sights, sounds and smells and those people dear to your heart. Layton, I still miss you more everyday and it's very hard to get over the anger of how you were taken. I will never accept it and never forgive the ones responsible.

This will be our 4th Christmas without our dear son Layton. Time has healed some of the pain, but not nearly all of it. We miss him just as much as when he first passed away. Today Nov. 10/05 is the 4th anniversary of Layton's passing. Layton's Dad & I have thought about Layton constantly today and Paul wondered if "Layton was thinking of us all today and wanting us not to be too sad". The pain in our hearts doesn't lessen, but we have learned to live with it. The continued support from our wonderful family and friends makes going on much easier. Dear Montpellier family! I would like to give you my deepest sympathy and compassion for what has happened to your dear son. Just two days ago I lost a very dear friend of mine in a car crash. He was dead right off the place. He just like Layton was an aspiring young man with his whole future ahead of him. I comfort myself with the thought that he is with god up in heaven. I know he is there. I knew Layton through friends in Peace River and GP... When I read your side of the story I was brought to tears once again and realized how hard it is to lose someone you love so much. Today March 25th, 2005, would have been Layton's 26th birthday. We have thought about him very much today and have wondered if he were alive, where would he be working, living, and if he would have children yet. Time is healing our wound, but ever so slowly. We are so lucky to have our other two sons Les, and Lane & family, that give us such a purpose in life. Also the rest of our family & friends who continue to e-mail, phone, and visit us often. I have written before, but recently i too lost someone to the hands of someone else, he was only 19 and was someone who i had grown up with, he was a great laugh, cheeky and always had a smile on his face. i know that before i expressed my sadness for Layton's family and friends, but it is now that i can deeply express how sorry i am; going through such a thing myself has made me realize you cannot understand what is going through one's mind until you endure the pain yourself. it deeply saddens me, how life can be taken so soon, barely given time to experience life, though i keep myself comforted by understanding, and not getting frustrated.. i understand that he is happy i try not to think about the pain he suffered just hope that it was minimum, i know that he lived a good life, and i do know that he wouldn't have wanted it to end so soon- that is what hurts the most...he had dreams he had hopes, it even made me question my faith at one point, but i believe that he is watching over me, he's present when i'm happy and when i'm sad. i'll think about him and remember all the good times that we shared together. we should not fear for those who have passed, eternity feels no pain, eternity has no end.

I am very sad at at this time. I miss Layton with such an ache in my heart. Christmas will be very difficult this year, as we have just recently on Nov. 29th, lost a very special Aunt of Layton. Auntie Carol passed away from cancer and is now in heaven with Layton. She was his Godmother, so is now taking care of him until I get there. I so look forward to being able to hug my 6'6 son again. Today is the Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday. In one month it will be 3 yrs. since the death of our dear son Layton. We have just returned from a parole hearing for the young man who stabbed Layton. He had applied for day parole after serving only 16 mos. in the Jail where he is incarcerated. It was another very difficult day for our family. The outcome of the hearing proved to be on our side. The young man was denied parole due to still being a risk to the community into which he would be living. He has not completed the necessary programs to properly be rehabilitated. We saw the true character of this young man. He is still a troubled man with a lot to learn. He still doesn't take responsibility for killing Layton. We think he will have to stay in jail for the duration of his time as he doesn't seem to be able to be responsible. We gave impact statements as to how Layton's death is still affecting our lives. It has been 2 yrs. and 9 mos. since his terrible tragedy. We still cannot function properly and have many sad times. We hope to begin now to try to focus on the wonderful memories Layton left for us. We were so fortunate to have him for 22 years, and have to remember all the joy and good times we all had with him. As we try to keep moving on....love Mom

Happy Father's Day to all our Fathers. Today has been another sad day missing our Layton. Its always in our minds he didn't have to die at such a young age and in such a horrible way. It will be Mother's Day 2004 in a couple of days. I hate holidays anymore because Layton can't be here in body. I know he is here with us in spirit. We have to try to always remember that. I'm feeling down this week as another family we know well, has also lost a son. This was not a murder, but its still a terrible loss for the parents. Hi, I'm almost 20 and I have what sounds like the same kind of love you probably still have in your heart with Layton. I would like to say I am so sorry for your loss and can not say that I know how you feel because I don't. But my sister passed three years ago at age 23 but hers was due to medical neglect so it is legal murder but I saw what her fiancé went through after her death. I watched him fall apart because they had been together for 4 years and they also lived together. He would go into her closet and just hold her clothes for hours and talk to me about how she would put on her make up and how she smelled and how hard it was to come home everyday and know she wasn't there anymore and that she would never be coming home again. I know just by watching him the pain and hurt you endured and probably will continue to endure for a while because when you love someone that much and then just as fast as they entered your life they exited it - that is not an easy loss. I miss my sister very much - I still can't believe she is gone. I look for her to come through my door all the time or to get a phone call from her to discuss crazy topics or just for her to sit on the phone while I listen to her breathe but god what I would give to hear her breathe now. So yes, I do understand the hurt which is why I would like to say to his family, only time can ease the pain or so I have heard. I haven't actually had that pleasure because my sister was a huge part of my life and now there is a huge hole that nothing can fill. So I talk to her on a regular basis through the phones of heaven and those lines are always open. may god bless and keep you

I awoke this morning and thought it's Layton's 25th birthday. I thought of all the birthdays I had made his favorite chocolate cake. He loved chocolate cake. Layton was always so excited about all occasions in life. I visited him at his gravesite and took some Easter flowers with pretend eggs. It gives me comfort to come to this site and reread the messages from all of Layton's friends. I've just passed another birthday (53rd) without Layton. I was very sad that day as something's always missing no matter how upbeat we try to stay. My uncle towed a serial killer back to his service station. My uncle ran his credit card. Unbeknownst to him, it belonged to this guys last homicide victim. It came back rejected and he stabbed my poor little uncle in his heart. He killed two other people before him. One was a 24 y.o. pregnant girl he abducted from her house and another was a young man who just got married. He stabbed them all. This hurts me every day. I guess it just takes time. It has been one day shy of Two years since Layton was so violently taken from us because of the senseless, clueless actions of two useless punks whom our government and courts seem to think are deserving of rehabilitation. As you may have gathered, I am still very angry and livid as to how Layton was taken and how unfeeling and cold the Courts were regarding the fate of these two punk kids. My memories of Layton are always of him having a smile or a good laugh. The kid never seemed to have a bad day. He was very committed to whatever it was that he was doing. I remember him in either Jr. High or early Sr. High working on a term paper; nothing too special right? (no Thesis that's for sure) Well this project was Layton's first all-nighter. He was printing the final copy as he was getting ready for school the next morning. He was committed. Family was very important to Layton as well. He enjoyed helping with the family business and rarely if ever missed family functions, reunions or gatherings. This was definitely instilled in him from our parents. I could see this importance of family starting with Dawn. They seemed to me like the perfect couple. Kids and a loving marriage would have been a given, yet another reason for my anger. My greatest regret is that I did not get to know Layton as a young adult as much as I should have. I wished we could have spent a little more time together. We were so busy in our lives that we didn't take the time. I am so sorry that I did not. Writing these comments was difficult because it still seems so fresh. My pain pales in comparison to that of my parents Paul and Nellie and Dawn. I can't imagine what it is like for you. Hopefully time will continue to heal. Well, nearly two years now, and I'm still amazed at the injustice of it all. I can't help but notice punishments for other lesser crimes which are considerably lengthier and more severe than the punishment Layton's murderer is receiving. Today was Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. It was an especially hard day for me as it was exactly 2 yrs. ago on this day that I last saw my son Layton alive. He and Dawni left for Edmonton to go back to University and before he left, he wrote out all the steps on how to use the e-mail. He wanted me to learn this. Dear Alison, What a wonderful person he was and like you I too have lost someone special, my daughter, on May 11, 2003. She was murdered by her so called boyfriend after just receiving her MBA in Marriage and Family counseling. Your Layton, and my Christine had so much to offer and were taken from us in such a violated manner. I heard about the website on the John Walsh show. I'm so sorry for your loss. When I was about 15 years old, my brother heard something bad that my sister-in-law did and I guess he just lost his mind, something that he had never done before. He ended up stabbing her and then he shot himself. He did all of this while their three kids watched. They both passed away. This happened in 1989. I saw this website on Maury and decided to read your story. I am very sorry for you loss but I know that your wonderful boyfriend, best friend, and soul mate is in Heaven. I share your feeling of loss. My husband was robbed and beaten in may of 1994, and was pronounced brain-dead 7 days later. The man who did this was allowed to take a plea bargain and got 5 years for Voluntary Manslaughter.. NO JUSTICE. I never got to know Layton but I have been fortunate enough to have his younger brother Leslie in my life as a best friend and an Uncle Les to my son. Leslie, you are so strong, and caring and I admire you so much for how you have handled this immense sorrow. To me Layton was merely the nice, hot guy that worked at McLeods. I distinctly remember walking into Mcleods one day after school, kinda down because I had a hockey practice that night and knew the guys would "out" me again. I was 13 years old and played for the Falher Peewee's. I needed a new hockey stick, I asked Layton to help me pick out the best stick that would help me score lot's of goals so that the guys would like me. That day he told me that if the guys were crazy not to like me and that they were simply jealous because a girl was better than some of them. He told me to hold my head high and i remember him saying "you'll be great." That is really my only memory of Layton, but I will never forget it and even though he probably didn't even know my name or who I was those words on that day have and will continue to follow me my whole life through. I never go to thank him for that, so I will take this opportunity to say thanks Layton for everything you shared with everyone, big or small without the notion of doing so you touched so many hearts, and whatever lies is our hearts can never be taken from us no matter what. Your story was very touching, tears just filled my eyes. My son, Brad Gunn who was 18 at the time of his murder reminded me of him when I was reading this about Layton. Brad played football & baseball and was a really strong, big healthy person and would never do wrong to anyone. He met up with some of his friends one night on November 6th, 2001 and was shot in his pickup truck with a .44 gun. The bullet went in the right side of his head & came out of the left side. He died instantly. I miss him so much, just like I know how you miss Layton. It is very hard to deal with the pain you feel over losing someone you love so deeply to murder. I never thought it could happen to me & I'm sure you're thinking the same. I pray to God everyday to give me strength to keep on going, but it is so hard. I never will forget, that awful telephone call, someone on the other end made my heart just fall. I never thought the day would come that I would say goodbye, to my little favorite cousin and lose him to the sky! I think about him everyday and not a day goes by that I don't tell my daughter Preslee he was a great guy! I wish she could have known him, she only met him once the smile on his face that day and the love in his touch. The only thing that gets me through is knowing that he's watching over us with a smile on his face. This is a beautiful website in Layton's memory. I only knew Layton as a very young boy when I lived in Falher. He turned out to be a loving, wonderful man and I am very saddened by his death. I remember Layton as a young kid when I worked for Paul and Nellie. Layton would always show up at the store after school, with his big smile. I also remember when Layton played on our slow pitch team, he would always give his all and was great to have around. My last memories of Layton was seeing him in the summer working at the store and I remember one instance where I got my son Ryan a gum from the gum machine they have near the front door. Layton being who he was said " Oh Ryan that gum is pretty old", there you go another example of Layton thinking of others by worrying that Ryan would get a dry gum! I also remember talking to Layton at a new years dance at the Knights of Columbus hall, I couldn't believe how big he had gotten from working out. We had a little chat and that was the last time I spoke to him. I'll always remember Layton as a friendly, happy person, and it is a shame that our community has lost him.

I remember going to school with Layton in Gr. 10 at Vanier and he was one of the few who was so caring and helpful. He never looked down on anyone and he was a really wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers have been with you ever since I heard about that awful night.

I have been penfriends with Dawn since 1991 so although i never met Layton i knew bits and pieces about their relationship. It saddens me to know that such a beautiful person was taken away from us so young. But we must remind ourselves that hopefully we all end up in a better place where we can look down on those we love and know that we will always be in their hearts.

I would have become Layton's mother-in-law. He was a great friend to so many people, regardless of age. I considered him a great friend of mine, and I miss him very much. It's still unbelievable and unthinkable that his life should have ended in the manner that it did.
