Sarah
Kate Hutchings
At first it was thought Sarah had died of a heart attack. Two days after her death, the coroner performed an autopsy and informed the police that Sarah had been strangled. By this time, family members and friends had disturbed the crime scene. It was my second day in England to visit family and friends, when I received a call from my husband saying Sarah had died possibly of a heart attack. Having just begun to recover from the death of my grandson at the age of 19, eight months earlier, I was shocked beyond belief. The following day another call from California revealed it was a homicide. She had been strangled and drowned. Who could have done such a thing? In these ensuing nine years, we have endured three investigations. The first suspect took two years, including a Grand Jury hearing that resulted in an arrest. Later his attorney filed a $1.3 million dollar lawsuit against the City of Santa Rosa for harassment. This investigation took another year or more until he dropped the suit. The case then went back to the police department for more investigation, including help from the District Attorney’s office. Both departments have spent considerable sums and numerous hours investigating all of Sarah’s friends and acquaintances, to no avail. The Police Department and the DA’s office have assured us that it is still an open case, and again active. And so we wait and wait and wait. No one has the right to take the life of another without some punishment. Memories are many; i.e. “Put the kettle on Mom, I’m coming over,” resulting in cups of tea and conversation. She would tell her friends that I was her role model in life. I miss her!
